COMMON QUESTIONS

Q&A

Everything you need to know before booking your first lesson with Barry.

Getting Started

How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?

You must be at least 17 years old to drive on a public road in the UK. You can, however, apply for your provisional driving licence at 15 years and 9 months, so it's ready when you turn 17.

Do I need a provisional licence before my first lesson?

Yes - you must hold a valid UK provisional driving licence before you can take driving lessons on public roads. Make sure you have it with you at your first lesson.

What should I bring to my first lesson?

Bring your provisional driving licence and wear comfortable, flat shoes suitable for driving. You don't need to bring anything else - Barry will provide everything you need.

I'm very nervous - is that okay?

Absolutely. Barry is experienced with nervous beginners and will take things at your pace. Your first lesson will be somewhere quiet so you can get comfortable before moving to busier roads.

The Driving Test

When am I ready to take my test?

Barry will let you know when he believes you are test-ready. Don't feel pressured to book before you're ready - but equally, don't put it off if you're consistently driving to the required standard.

Can Barry take me to my test?

Yes - Barry can take you to your driving test in his car as part of your lesson time. This is usually recommended as it means you arrive already warmed up and familiar with the vehicle.

What if I fail my test?

Don't worry - many learners need more than one attempt. Barry will go through your test report with you, address the areas that need work, and get you ready to re-sit as quickly as possible.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a 6-hour course you can take after passing your test. It covers motorway driving, night driving, rural roads, dual carriageways, and town driving. Many insurers offer a discount to Pass Plus holders.
